App Store Connect: Resubmit greyed out until "Update Review"
The message: Resubmit button is disabled after a rejection
Short answerAfter App Review rejects a version, the Resubmit button stays disabled until you open the version page and click Update Review, then Continue. That reopens the submission for edits. Then Resubmit (or the API call) works.
Why it happens
A rejected submission is frozen with what the reviewer saw. Update Review moves it back to an editable state, which is also what the API waits for before it accepts a resubmission.
When we hit it
We resubmitted 11 apps on October 5 and the button was disabled on every one until Update Review. We scripted both steps in a browser automation (click Update Review, then Resubmit) for the batch. On October 20 Chain hit the same lock through the API as a 409 until Update Review was clicked.
Fix, step by step
- Fix the issue (metadata, rating, or a new build).
- Open the rejected version page and click Update Review, then Continue.
- Click Resubmit to App Review.
- Note: if the rejection said reply instead of resubmit (4.3), reply first.
