Guideline 4.2.6: Apps created from a template or app generation service
Short answerGuideline 4.2.6 rejects apps built from a commercial template or app generation service unless the owner of the content submits them under their own account. Apple bundles it with 4.3 spam: all 22 of our 4.3 rejections cited 4.2.6 too, even though we wrote every app ourselves. The fix is to answer its two questions precisely: what you share with other apps, and who owns the content.
“Apps created from a commercialized template or app generation service will be rejected unless they are submitted directly by the provider of the app's content.” Guideline 4.2.6
What it means
4.2.6 targets agencies and app builders that publish many client apps from one template under the agency's account. Apple wants either the client to submit the app under the client's account, or one "picker" app that hosts every client (a restaurant finder with one page per restaurant). It does not ban reusing your own code across your own apps.
In the combined 4.3 + 4.2.6 email, questions 7, 8 and 9 are the 4.2.6 ones: does the binary share significant code, frameworks or assets with your other apps; with any third-party app; and was the app made for a client who provided the content.
What happened to us
We answered all three for each of 11 apps, honestly: no client, no third-party template, every screen and text specific to the app, and two reused files disclosed (the StoreKit 2 purchase handling for one non-consumable, and a test-only driver that records the walkthrough video and is inactive in normal use). The answers did not change the outcome: the second round was rejected on a 7-day timer without a reply to the text.

What worked
- Disclosing the reused purchase code did not hurt the 8 live apps: updates that added it were approved.
- If you are an agency: submit from the client's own developer account (the client invites you as a team member), or build one picker-style app.
If you got Guideline 4.2.6: do this
- Say plainly who owns the content and the developer account.
- List each shared file and what it does; "standard third-party frameworks" (StoreKit, SwiftUI) do not count.
- If you built it for a client, move it to their account before resubmitting.
- Keep the reply under 4,000 characters; App Store Connect cuts there.
Questions
Does AI-generated code count as an app generation service?
Not by the guideline's wording, which is about commercial templates and services submitting for clients. But our 11 agent-built apps were all flagged under it alongside 4.3, so be ready to explain your process.
