Semantic versioning (semver)
Short answerSemantic versioning numbers releases MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH: breaking changes bump MAJOR, new compatible features bump MINOR, fixes bump PATCH. Cargo reads serde = "1.0" as "any 1.x at or above 1.0.0".
Why it matters
It decides which updates cargo update takes on its own. Below 1.0, Cargo treats the MINOR number as breaking: 0.4 will not move to 0.5.
Our number
117 of the top 300 crates are at 1.0 or above; the other 183 are still on 0.x, where every minor bump may break you.
