clippy::mut_from_ref: This lint checks for functions that take immutable references and return mutable ones
What it meansThis lint checks for functions that take immutable references and return mutable ones. This will not trigger if no unsafe code exists as there are multiple safe functions which will do this transformation To be on the conservative side, if there’s at least one mutable reference with the output lifetime, this lint will not trigger. It is in the correctness group and denied by default (the build fails).
Does it matter?
Creating a mutable reference which can be repeatably derived from an immutable reference is unsound as it allows creating multiple live mutable references to the same object. This error actually lead to an interim Rust release 1.15.1.
Code that is almost certainly wrong. Denied by default: the build fails until you fix it or allow it.
How to fix it
Clippy does not fix this one automatically. Change the code by hand:
Flagged
fn foo(&Foo) -> &mut Bar { .. }
Turn it off, or on
Allow it where it does not fit your code, as narrowly as you can:
On one item
#[allow(clippy::mut_from_ref)]
fn my_function() { /* ... */ }Whole crate (Cargo.toml)
[lints.clippy]
mut_from_ref = "allow"One run
cargo clippy -- -A clippy::mut-from-refThe [lints] table needs Rust 1.74 or newer. In a workspace, put it under [workspace.lints.clippy] and add [lints] workspace = true to each member.

What it does

To be on the conservative side, if there’s at least one mutable reference with the output lifetime, this lint will not trigger.
Why is this bad?
Creating a mutable reference which can be repeatably derived from an immutable reference is unsound as it allows creating multiple live mutable references to the same object.
This error actually lead to an interim Rust release 1.15.1.
Known problems
This pattern is used by memory allocators to allow allocating multiple objects while returning mutable references to each one. So long as different mutable references are returned each time such a function may be safe.
Example
fn foo(&Foo) -> &mut Bar { .. }
