Steam launch data for indie developers
Short answerA free Steam game can collect thousands of claims and very few players: O'BLOCK had 4,566 free claims and 82 people who played (1.8%) by Oct 23, 3:40 PM ET, three days after launch. Most free games get even fewer: 3,237 of the 4,688 free-to-play games SteamSpy lists (69%) had nobody online at their daily peak when we checked. Keep the download small: the median top-60 free game lists 8 GB, and at Steam's world-average 129 Mbps a 30 GB download takes 31 min.

What we learned shipping O'BLOCK
- Borrow Balatro's UI grammar, not its cards: 5 builds in one night
- Xbox's new cloud cap can't finish 42% of its own games
- 2,077 claimed our free Steam game. 16 played it. 30 GB did that
- Sweeney wants rockets. 37,800 bots crashed my vibe-coded game
- Balatro save file runs as code. 1 in 5 corrupted saves load anyway
- Steam Next Fest opens Oct 19. Our game launches 24 hours later
- Bevy instancing: drawing 639,000 units with one draw call per mesh
