   529 overloaded_error means Anthropic is temporarily overloaded. 429 rate_limit_error is your rate limit (read retry-after). 401 is the key. See your tier's limits on our model reference.

What to do while Anthropic API is down

When Anthropic API is down, requests to api.anthropic.com fail or slow down. Incidents often hit specific models, so another Claude model may still work.

1. Let the SDK retry, then back off

   The official SDKs already retry connection errors, 408, 409, 429 and 5xx twice by default; raise max_retries for batch-style work.

2. Try another Claude model

   The official page names the models in each incident. Swapping Opus for Sonnet (or the reverse) often works during a model-specific incident.

3. Same model, different cloud

   Claude is also sold through Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI, which run their own capacity. It needs an account there set up in advance.

4. Fail over to another provider

   Pick a fallback at a similar price on our price table, then check its limits and features on the model reference.
