What works right now

  • UpSimple indexYes: pip and uv can find package files.200 in 157 ms
  • UpFile downloadsYes: wheels and sdists download.200 in 172 ms

Failing for you? Check whether it is you

  1. Is it you?

Check which index you are using; a company proxy or an old PIP_INDEX_URL is a common cause.

    pip config list
    echo $PIP_INDEX_URL $UV_INDEX_URL

What to do while PyPI is down

When PyPI is down, pip and uv cannot find or download packages you do not have cached. If the index answers but files.pythonhosted.org does not, resolution works and downloads fail.

  1. Install from your cache

uv can run entirely from its cache.

    uv sync --offline
uv pip install --offline -r requirements.txt
  2. Install from a wheel folder

Download wheels once while PyPI is up, then install with no index at all.

    pip download -r requirements.txt -d wheels/
    pip install --no-index --find-links wheels/ -r requirements.txt
  3. Use a mirror for now

Pin hashes (pip-compile --generate-hashes) and pip refuses any file that does not match, whichever server sent it.

    pip install -i https://pypi.tuna.tsinghua.edu.cn/simple --require-hashes -r requirements.txt

How we check PyPI

Every 5 minutes, from Washington, D.C., with no API key. A failed check is retried once after 2 seconds before it counts; PyPI is down when every critical check fails, and degraded when some do or the official page reports a problem.
