Free sleep sounds you can mix
Sleep is a free sleep sound player that runs in your browser. Tap white, pink or brown noise (or rain, ocean, fan and fireplace with Plus), mix as many as you like with a volume for each, and set a sleep timer that fades the sound out so it never stops with a jump.
There is no video and no ad in the sound: every sound is made live in your browser with the Web Audio API, so it loops with no gap and works offline once the page has loaded.
How to use it
- Tap a sound. It starts playing; tap more to layer them, and drag each slider to balance the mix.
- Pick a sleep timer, from 15 minutes to 2 hours, or no timer to play all night.
- Tap Wind down. The screen goes almost black and a slow circle helps you breathe: 4 seconds in and 6 out, or 4-7-8.
- In the morning, tap I'm up and your night goes in the sleep log. Rate it with the stars if you like.
White noise, pink noise or brown noise?
All three are random noise. The difference is how the energy is spread across pitches. White noise has equal energy at every frequency, so it sounds like a bright hiss, like a TV between channels. Pink noise drops by 3 decibels per octave, so it is softer and sounds more like steady rain or wind. Brown noise drops by 6 decibels per octave, which leaves a deep rumble, like a waterfall heard from a distance or the inside of a plane.
No colour is proven best for sleep. A 2021 systematic review of 38 studies in Sleep Medicine Reviews (Riedy and colleagues) rated the evidence that continuous noise improves sleep as very low quality. What noise does well is cover sudden sounds, like traffic or a neighbour's door, with a steady one. So try each for a night and keep the one you stop noticing.
Rain sounds for sleeping
Our rain is a soft bed of pink noise with random drops on top, so it never repeats in a way you can follow. Layer it with brown noise for a storm, or with the fireplace for a cabin. The Storm, Seaside, Box fan and Cabin mixes are one tap away with Plus, and you can save your own.
A sleep timer that fades out
Pick 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. The sound plays at your volume, then fades out over the last few minutes, up to 5, and stops. The fade is scheduled on the audio clock rather than a page timer, so it still happens on time when the tab is in the background or the screen is off.
Keep it quiet
Louder is not better. A 2014 study in Pediatrics (Hugh and colleagues) measured 14 infant sleep machines and found that at full volume some went past the noise limit recommended for hospital nurseries. For anyone, and especially for babies, use the lowest volume that covers the noise and keep the speaker away from your head.

Questions
Are these sleep sounds free?
Yes. White, pink and brown noise, the sleep timer, the wind-down screen, the bedtime reminder and the last 7 nights of your sleep log are free, with no sign-up and no ads in the sound. Tensorust Plus ($2.99 a month or $14.99 a year) adds rain, ocean, fan and fireplace, saved mixes, your full log with insights, and sync.
Do the sounds loop without a gap?
Yes. Each sound is made live in your browser and loops with a crossfade, so there is no click or silence at the loop point and nothing to download. Nothing stops after an hour unless you set the timer.
Will it keep playing with the screen off?
On a computer or an Android phone, yes, as long as the tab stays open. On iPhone, Safari can pause web audio when the phone locks, so the safest way is to leave the screen on in Wind down, which turns it almost black.
Which noise is best for sleep: white, pink or brown?
There is no proven best. A 2021 systematic review in Sleep Medicine Reviews found the evidence that continuous noise improves sleep is of very low quality. Pick the one you notice least. Many people find brown or pink noise gentler than white, because they have less hiss.
Is white noise safe for babies?
Keep it quiet and away from the crib. A 2014 study in Pediatrics measured 14 infant sleep machines and found some could exceed recommended noise limits at full volume. Use a low volume, put the device across the room, and ask your pediatrician if you are unsure.
How does the sleep timer work?
Pick 15 minutes to 2 hours. The sound plays at your volume, then fades out slowly over the last few minutes (up to 5) and stops, so it never cuts off with a jump. The fade runs on the audio clock, so it still happens when the tab is in the background.
Do bedtime reminders work if I close the tab?
They fire while this page or the installed app is open, even in the background. Browsers do not let a closed web page wake itself up at a set time, so if you close it, the reminder waits for the next time you open it.
Where is my sleep log stored?
In your browser, on your device. We cannot see it. With Plus sync, a copy is stored with your Tensorust account so your other devices get it, and you can delete it any time from the Plus page.
