The short version

Search USAspending.gov by keyword (brand and product names) with Award Type set to Contracts, not by recipient name. Agencies buy a lot of software through resellers, so the company you care about is often not the one that got paid. For Anthropic between Feb 27 and Oct 27 2026, a recipient search found $114,000; the keyword search found $1,012,540.46, and a cleaned "Claude" search found $1,101,545.82.

Card: Search USAspending for any vendor. Recipient means who got paid, and resellers hide the brand. Anthropic, Feb 27 to Oct 27 2026: recipient filter Anthropic finds 1 award for $114,000; keyword Anthropic finds 4 awards for $1,012,540.46; keyword Claude, cleaned, finds 6 awards for $1,101,545.82.
Same vendor, same dates, three very different totals. Card by Tensorust from USAspending API results, Oct 27 2026.

TL;DR: We ran the same vendor three ways through the free USAspending API on Oct 27 2026. Recipient "Anthropic": 1 award, $114,000. Keyword "Anthropic": 4 awards, $1,012,540.46. Keyword "Claude": 17 raw awards worth $2,720,440.01, of which 6 were real Claude buys after removing building and moving contracts. The method below is how we built our story on federal Claude purchases after the ban.

Government spending data is public, and almost nobody reads it right. The press repeats what a company or an agency says; the ledger often says something else. Fifteen minutes with this method and you can check any "the government stopped buying X" or "X has huge federal contracts" claim yourself.

Bars: USAspending contract totals for one vendor, Feb 27 to Oct 27 2026. Recipient name Anthropic: $114,000. Keyword Anthropic: $1,012,540. Keyword Claude, raw with noise: $2,720,440. USAspending API spending_by_award, run by Tensorust Oct 27 2026. The raw Claude total includes unrelated Claude Pepper Federal Building contracts.

Step 01: Start with a keyword, not a recipient

Go to usaspending.gov/search, choose Award Search, set Award Type to Contracts, and type the brand and the product names into Keyword ("Anthropic", "Claude for Government"). Keywords hit the award description, and reseller orders almost always name the product there: "ANTHROPIC CLAUDE FOR GOVERNMENT (C4G)".

Step 02: Set the time period

Pick the action-date window that matches the question. To test a ban, start the day it took effect; for Anthropic that is Feb 27 2026. Totals only mean something against a dated event.

Step 03: Clean the noise

Keywords are blunt. "Claude" also returns the Claude Pepper Federal Building in Miami (HVAC, moving, construction). Sort by recipient, scan descriptions, and drop anything that only shares a word. Write down what you dropped and why, so the count is reproducible.

Step 04: Read who got paid

Card: who shows up as the recipient. Labor $898,539.46 to ThunderCat Technology on NASA SEWP; Energy $59,244.36 to Carahsoft; NEA $29,760 to Carahsoft on GSA schedule 47QSWA18D008F; FCC two $1 pilot orders to Carahsoft; Smithsonian $114,000 to Anthropic, PBC directly. Only one of five buyers paid Anthropic directly. From USAspending award records, Oct 27 2026.

Check the Recipient and Parent Award ID columns. Software usually flows through resellers (Carahsoft, ThunderCat) holding a GSA schedule or a NASA SEWP vehicle. That is why the recipient search found one award: only the Smithsonian bought straight from Anthropic, PBC.

Step 05: Open the award page

Click any Award ID. The award page shows the full description, the contract vehicle, every modification, and a link to the underlying FPDS record. Modifications matter: a $1 pilot can grow, and a big order can be de-obligated later.

Step 06: Pull it with the API

The site sits on a free API with no key. The same search in one call:

curl -s -X POST https://api.usaspending.gov/api/v2/search/spending_by_award/ \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"filters":{"keywords":["Claude for Government"],
       "award_type_codes":["A","B","C","D"],
       "time_period":[{"start_date":"2026-02-27","end_date":"2026-10-27"}]},
       "fields":["Award ID","Recipient Name","Award Amount","Awarding Agency","Start Date","Description"],
       "limit":50,"sort":"Award Amount","order":"desc"}'

Award type codes A to D are the contract types (BPA calls, purchase orders, delivery orders, definitive contracts). Swap keywords for recipient_search_text to see the difference yourself. Save the JSON with a date and rerun it weekly to spot new awards.

Troubleshooting

What goes wrong

  • Recipient-only searches undercount anything sold through resellers. Always run the keyword search too.
  • Keyword noise inflates totals; our raw Claude total was 2.5 times the real one.
  • Reporting lag: recent orders can take days or weeks to appear, so a quiet month is not proof of no buying.
  • Amounts move: modifications change obligations. Quote the date you pulled the data.

Do this next

Pick one company in a story you are reading and run Steps 1 to 4 on it today. If you want that check rerun for you as filings and awards land, Company Watch monitors USAspending, SEC EDGAR and lobbying filings for the companies you follow. More reading: defense tech contracts and the Anduril bubble and SpaceX's federal money.

FAQ

Why does a recipient search miss contracts?

Recipient is the entity that got paid. Federal agencies often buy software through resellers such as Carahsoft or ThunderCat, so the award lists the reseller. Searching Anthropic as a recipient found 1 contract for $114,000 from Feb 27 to Oct 27 2026; searching the keyword found 4 for $1,012,540.46.

Is USAspending data complete?

It is the official public source for federal award data under the DATA Act, but agencies report with lags, and contract amounts can change with later modifications. Recheck before you rely on a total.

Does USAspending have a free API?

Yes. api.usaspending.gov is free and needs no key. The spending_by_award endpoint takes the same filters as the website search.

What is the difference between USAspending and SAM.gov?

SAM.gov holds registrations and open opportunities. USAspending shows money already awarded and spent, fed by FPDS for contracts.
