Short answer: Elon Musk has put $445.7M into US politics since January 2025, by our count of every itemized FEC filing under his name, and $355M of it landed after July 1. In the same two fiscal years the federal government obligated $5.97B in contracts to SpaceX. That is $13.40 of federal money for every political dollar, and our read is simple: this is the most rational ad budget in America.
TL;DR: We pulled 114 itemized contributions from FEC filings (processed and raw e-filings) and found $445.7M from Musk since Jan 2025, with $224.5M in September 2026 alone, including two checks of $83M and $75M to the Senate Leadership Fund. His own America PAC got $215.9M, and its 57 biggest ad buys since Sep 4 ($39.8M) are 86% attack ads, $27.65M of them against Texas Democrat James Talarico. USAspending shows $5.97B obligated to SpaceX in FY2025 and FY2026 and $17.45B since FY2008, and the Congress he is trying to pick is the one that funds the agencies that sign those checks.

$445.7M, and most of it showed up in one month
CNBC put Musk's midterm commitment at roughly $366M across at least 40 races in its Oct 22 report. We went to the filings ourselves and the number is bigger.
Every itemized contribution filed under "Musk, Elon" or his revocable trust since January 1 2025 adds up to $445.7M. That counts the FEC's processed data plus the raw e-filings that super PACs sent in through Oct 23, the ones the processed tables have not caught up with yet.
The timing is the tell. Musk gave $73.5M in all of 2025. Then $50.3M in August 2026, $224.5M in September and $76.8M in the first half of October. 79% of the whole two-year total landed in the last three months before the Nov 3 vote.

For scale, CNBC says he spent nearly $300M on Trump and congressional Republicans in 2024. The midterms already passed that, with nine days of checks still to come. No cap, this is a presidential-sized budget for an off-year election.
Where it went: his own PAC and the two Republican leadership machines
Three committees took 93% of the money. America PAC, the super PAC Musk built for 2024, got $215.9M, including $38.2M of in-kind help like voter data, petition work and survey research. The Senate Leadership Fund got $168.0M. The Congressional Leadership Fund got $30.0M.
The biggest single checks: $83M to the Senate Leadership Fund on Sep 23, $75M to the same fund on Sep 9, and $43.2M to America PAC on Oct 14. Another $10M went to Lone Star Liberty PAC on Aug 21 from the Elon Musk Revocable Trust, a Texas committee in the same Senate fight.

Now the funny part. Musk wrote 64 normal-sized checks to 25 candidate committees, party committees and WinRed. Total: $305,600. That is 0.07% of his spending. The "donor" part of the story is a rounding error. The super PAC part is the whole story.
What America PAC buys: attack ads, mostly in Texas
We pulled America PAC's 57 largest independent expenditures since January, each $244K or more, all reported on 24-hour notices between Sep 4 and Oct 23. They total $39.8M, and $34.4M of it (86%) pays to attack a candidate rather than promote one.
The target list is short. $27.65M against James Talarico, the Democrat running for Senate in Texas. $4.3M for Ken Paxton, his Republican opponent. $3.75M against Sherrod Brown in Ohio. $2.15M against Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan. Smaller buys against Joshua Turek in Iowa and Troy Jackson in Maine.

The money flows mostly to one vendor. IMGE LLC, a Washington digital firm, took $28.6M of those 57 buys. Storytellers Group LLC took $8.8M.
Talarico's line, quoted by CNBC: "There is something deeply wrong with a political system that allows one trillionaire to buy his own personal U.S. Senator." Musk's line on X, also via CNBC: "Live by the sword, die by the sword." Both of them are telling you exactly what this is.
The AI angle nobody is pricing in
Look at who gets attacked. CNBC reports El-Sayed wants to pause advanced AI and new data centers until tougher federal rules exist, and Brown has pledged to make data centers pay their full electricity costs. And Musk's AI business, the company formerly known as xAI, now sits inside SpaceX, which holds a Pentagon AI contract with a $200M ceiling, per CNBC.
Our read: the midterms are lowkey the first election where the AI buildout is on the ballot, and the richest AI owner is buying the outcome he needs. You can call that corruption or call it lobbying with extra steps. Either way the filings are public, and almost nobody reads them.
Follow the money: SpaceX's $5.97B
Here is the other side of the ledger. USAspending.gov, the Treasury's public spending database, shows $3.01B in federal contract obligations to Space Exploration Technologies in FY2025 and $2.96B in FY2026, which ended Sep 30. An obligation is money the government has legally committed to pay, not a headline award value.
Since FY2008 the obligations total $17.45B in our pull. FedScout, the research firm CNBC used, counts $30.7B in federal work since 2008 and $6.78B in calendar 2026 alone. The gap is the point: a lot of what SpaceX has been promised is still sitting in award ceilings and future task orders.

CNBC lists two of them. In late May the Space Force awarded SpaceX $2.29B for a military communications network tied to Golden Dome and, three days later, $4.16B for threat-detection satellites. Congress does not sign those contracts. It funds and oversees the Pentagon and NASA, which do.
That is why the target list matters. America PAC is backing Sen. Susan Collins, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee, the committee that writes the money bills for NASA and the Pentagon. Our 57-buy list shows $0.34M against her challenger, Troy Jackson.
13.4x: the ratio Washington will not say out loud
Put the two numbers on one line. $5.97B in SpaceX contract obligations over FY2025 and FY2026, divided by $445.7M in Musk political money since January 2025, is 13.4. That is our math, from public data, and it leaves out Tesla, X and every regulatory decision with no price tag attached.

We are not saying the checks bought the contracts. Nothing in the record says that, and SpaceX was winning launches long before America PAC existed. We are saying that any business that gets billions a year from one customer, run by a guy with this much cash, would do the same math. He just did it out loud.
The pattern says the spending goes up when the risk goes up. CNBC reports Democrats are favored to take the House, and Democratic control means subpoenas into his companies, his contracts and his DOGE work. September's $224.5M is what that risk costs.
Our bet: the post-general FEC reports due in December will show Musk's total for the 2026 cycle above $500M, and if the House flips, the first big oversight fight is over SpaceX's Golden Dome awards, not Tesla.
Who wins, who loses
- Wins: IMGE LLC ($28.6M of the 57 biggest buys), the Senate Leadership Fund ($168.0M), Ken Paxton ($4.3M in pro ads plus $27.65M against his opponent), and every TV and digital seller in Texas.
- Wins if it works: SpaceX, whose $5.97B two-year federal haul depends on appropriations bills and friendly oversight chairs.
- Loses: James Talarico, the target of 69% of America PAC's biggest buys. Also every small donor in these races, who write checks in the hundreds. Even Musk's own biggest check straight to a candidate committee was $6,600, next to his $224.5M September.
- Loses if it works: anyone who wanted the AI and data center buildout to pay its own power bill.

How we counted
FEC receipts: every Schedule A row with contributor "Musk, Elon" or the Elon Musk Revocable Trust dated Jan 1 2025 or later, from the FEC's processed data plus raw e-filings for Jul 1 to Oct 23 2026, one duplicate removed. We kept rows of $100K or more from the e-filings, so a few small late checks may be missing. America PAC ad buys: the 57 unique 24-hour reports of $244K or more, with the matching quarterly-report copies removed. SpaceX: USAspending spending over time for recipient "Space Exploration Technologies", contract types A to D, by fiscal year. FY2026 rows are still being filed. Lobbying totals came back rate-limited from the Senate database, so we left them out.
