Short answer: If your iPhone Duo's folding screen cracks outside warranty, Apple will charge you $999 to replace it. That is 50% of the $1,999 phone, 3x what Apple charges for an iPhone 18 Pro screen, and $420 more than Samsung charges to fix a Galaxy Z Fold8. The number is real, it comes from Apple's own repair price tool, and the Duo store page never mentions it.
TL;DR: We pulled every out-of-warranty and AppleCare+ price in Apple's US repair price tool on October 25 2026: 412 prices across 43 iPhone models. The Duo's inner display costs $999 to replace, while the priciest screen on any of the other 42 iPhones tops out at $379. Even with AppleCare+, the fold costs $99 per incident against $29 for every other iPhone screen Apple lists, and this landed the same night iFixit published a teardown showing Duo screens cracking along the fold, some before owners finished setup.

The $999 number Apple keeps off the store page
Go to the iPhone Duo store page and search it for "999". You get the $1,999 price tag and nothing else. The repair cost lives in a separate support page, inside a price widget that only fills in after JavaScript loads it from Apple's servers.
We read that widget's data directly. It is Apple's own pricing feed, the same one the support page shows you, and on October 25 2026 it listed eight Duo repairs. The inner display was $999. "Other damage", Apple's word for a hinge or frame job, was $1,499.
Nothing here is secret. It is just placed exactly where nobody buying a $1,999 phone looks. Lowkey the most Apple move possible: the price is public, technically.
Half the phone, when every other phone sits near a third
Here is the ratio that matters to a buyer: what the main screen repair costs as a share of what the phone costs new. For the Duo it is $999 on $1,999, exactly 50%.
Every other current phone we checked lands between 27% and 37%. The iPhone 18 Pro is $329 on $1,199 (27.4%). The iPhone Air is $329 on $1,099 (29.9%). Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 is $579 on $1,899 (30.5%), and its Fold8 Ultra is $639 on $2,099 (30.4%).
So this is not "foldables are expensive, deal with it". Samsung sells a folding phone at nearly the same price and charges a third of it to fix the fold. Apple charges half.

Apple vs Samsung: $420 for the same kind of crack
Both companies are fixing the same kind of part: a bendable OLED panel glued under a hinge. Samsung is on the Fold8. Apple is on its first. Samsung's inner screen repair is $579 on the Fold8 and $639 on the Fold8 Ultra, per prices Samsung confirmed in August and Notebookcheck's Antony Muchiri reported.
Apple's $999 is 1.73x the Fold8 and 1.56x the Ultra. That gap is $420 on the base Fold8, more than an entire iPhone 18 Pro screen repair.
Apple fans have been calling the Duo "creaseless". Samsung fans now get the comeback of the year: our crease is cheaper to fix.

Ten years of iPhone screens, then a cliff
Apple's price tool still lists screen repairs back to the iPhone 6s, which makes it a clean history of what Apple thinks a screen is worth. The base model went $149 (6s, 7, 8), then $199 (XR, 11), then $279 for five straight generations (12 through 16), then $329 for the iPhone 17.
The biggest Pro Max screens topped out at $379. That ceiling held across 42 models and a decade of OLED, ProMotion and Ceramic Shield. The Duo's inner panel is 2.6x that ceiling in one jump.

Even AppleCare+ charges 3.4x for the fold
The usual answer is "just buy AppleCare+". So we pulled the AppleCare+ view of the same feed. On all 42 other iPhones, a screen fix with AppleCare+ costs $29. The Duo's outer screen also costs $29.
The Duo's inner screen costs $99. That is the same fee Apple charges for "other accidental damage", the tier for a phone that took a real beating. In Apple's own pricing logic, a cracked fold is not a screen problem. It is a your-phone-got-wrecked problem.
There is one nice line on the menu: the crease-hiding cover layer on top of the inner screen is a separate service, $49 out of warranty and $19 with AppleCare+, per iFixit. Scratch the surface and it is cheap. Crack what is under it and you are back at $999.

The cracks iFixit found, and why they matter for your bill
iFixit's teardown, by Elizabeth Chamberlain with Arthur Shi and Shahram Mokhtari, went up on October 25 and is honestly kind to Apple. The Duo got a provisional 5 out of 10, the highest score iFixit has given any foldable. Batteries release with electricity, the outer screen comes off clean, the internal layout is flat.
Then the bad part. Owners are already reporting a small line down the fold and a bright line across the display, one of them within six hours of buying the phone and another before setup was done. One Reddit owner quoted by iFixit described folding it about four times, the hinge getting tight, and then "a loud pop".
iFixit overlaid CT scans and a 3D hinge model on photos of the damage. The breaks cluster just below where the display cable crosses the hinge, and its closing simulation shows one plausible cause: a center support bar that does not drop far enough, so the screen's curve comes down on it and creates a stress hotspot. iFixit is careful to call that a possibility, not a verdict.
Right now, iFixit says, Apple is handing out replacement units. Inside the one-year warranty, a manufacturing defect is Apple's bill. The $999 kicks in when Apple decides the crack is your fault, or when the warranty runs out and a hinge flaw shows up in month 13.
Follow the money: who wins at $999
Apple wins three ways. A $999 quote on a two-year-old Duo makes a new $1,999 Duo look reasonable. It makes AppleCare+ feel mandatory on day one. And it makes third-party repair look risky, since shops will be quoting a fragile, adhesive-heavy part whose replacement iFixit calls "delicate, finicky work".
The buyer loses the moment the phone leaves warranty. Battery service is $229 on the Duo against $129 on an iPhone 18 Pro, back glass is $199 against $159, and a full "other damage" repair is $1,499, 75% of a new phone. Almost every line on this menu costs more than the same fix on Apple's own flagship.
Samsung wins the argument for free. It did not have to cut a price. It just had to already be $420 cheaper.

Our bet: Apple blinks within six months
Here is what we think happens, and nobody has proven it yet. First-generation Apple hardware with a visible failure pattern has a history of ending up in a "service program", where Apple quietly fixes a known issue for free on affected units. If the crack reports keep clustering at the same spot on the hinge, a Duo display service program is the obvious move.
Our bet: within six months Apple either launches that program or trims the $999 price. Keeping a number this far above Samsung, on a phone whose fans sold it as the fold that finally got it right, is a bad look. And the crowd that paid $1,999 to be early is not the crowd that stays quiet.
Until then, the Duo is two phones at once: the most repairable foldable iFixit has opened, and the most expensive foldable screen to replace that we could find a price for. Both things are true. Only one shows up on your bill.

What this means for you
If you own a Duo: check your purchase date today, and check whether you are still inside Apple's return window. Inside the one-year warranty, a crack that starts at the hinge with a pop is a warranty claim, not a $999 repair, so get it to Apple before that clock runs out and keep every receipt and photo. If you are still deciding, price the phone at $1,999 plus AppleCare+, because Apple's own numbers say you are not really buying it without it.
The cheapest repair is the one you claim in time. Our Warranty and Return Deadline Tracker ($7, Google Sheets and Excel) logs every purchase, counts down its return window and warranty end date, and writes the claim letter when something breaks. If it does not track your deadlines and give you a ready claim letter, we keep fixing it at no extra cost until it does what it promises.
